I see the body as a matrix of living matter in a continual state of generation, degeneration and regeneration. I am interested in the dialogue between the interior and the exterior of our corporeality; in seeing the skin as a frontier between external reality and inner life of the self. That whilst we are alive we are made up of atoms, energy, flesh and blood and that when we die we become light, heat and nutrition; from apparent death comes life and what is dead has the appearance of life. Death in a way is fragmentation, the loss of an individual’s clear boundaries, in death the self dissolves and we become energy which is released into the atmosphere through burning or decomposition and what is left is an artefact or an object represented by a skull. |
